How To: Write My First Guest Post

I have never in my blogging career (four months) wrote a guest post for another blog yet! I know what you’re thinking… Well you can’t because you’re a newbie. No No No. I don’t believe that crap.

I think if you got the chops and you know what you’re talking about people will listen. Think of this as an example: Say Obama began blogging (yea that’s gonna happen)…Do you think people would listen to what he has to say? I think we might.

But you’re not Obama and neither am I. So I’ve put a little (10 hours) work into this post so I hope you don’t just skim through it because you should be a pro at guest posting after all the resources and tips I’ve collected for you on guest posting.

The reason I made this post is to help you and myself to get my first post on someone’s blog and hopefully gain some traffic to my sad and lonely blog. According to Glen Allsopp guest posting “is one of the best marketing tactics available today.”

I decided that if I am going to start writing a guest post then I should look at some of the best bloggers first, see what they do, how do they structure them and what are the tips going around the web about guest posting on other blogs.

Check it out:

I read this guest post by Maren Kate from escapingthe9to5.com that she wrote for Pat Flynn’s blog because of course they are both great bloggers and friends. What I learned from this guest post is that you want to write something that is related to the topic of the blog owners content. As you know when people visit smartpassiveincome.com they expect to read about “passive income” they don’t want to hear about Ostrich Babysitting (Sorry I figure I’d use my sense of humor). But anyway you get the point right? So if you skim through this just remember one thing.

When you write your first guest post, Make the Content Relevant to the Content Already Been Written There!

Okay so we all know who Seth Godin is right? I hope so!

Well what can I say…When I think of value I think of Seth. Pretty much any time Seth writes something or speaks somewhere its unique and fresh. Even though he might not write massive guest posts, every word counts as 10 words. He simply knows how to get a point across. So the main point here in one sentence is: Be unique and useful in what you write for that blog, share your best ideas.

I actually just started reading Neil’s blog (QUICKSPROUT.COM) about two or three weeks ago and I’m impressed, I must say. I really like his style of writing and all the information he has to offer. This must be the reason he’s able to guest post in one of the biggest blog’s Techcrunch.

Talk about creating great content. Yea we’ve all heard that one -create great content!!!! I will repeat that -create great content!!. I know that when the owner or editor of Techcrunch saw this guest post, they had to say WOW this is good. You can tell one thing for sure from reading that post that it really took Neil a few ours to put it together and make it all work. So here’s what I got from this one:

  • Read your post after writing it
  • Make sure it is complete
  • Craft it carefully
  • Proofread it
  • Add some good links inside the content
  • Write pillar articles inside the post itself

My last person that I decided to spy on was my friend Glen Allsopp. Glen is probably the most REAL guy out there; for those who don’t know who he is, go to his site now. He writes about viral marketing

Glen is the man. Even though he didn’t know if he should give away some of his secrets he still did. So I learned that if you know something that other people don’t know that could be something you can share on a guest post. He really delivers value when he writes. Here’s what I learned from Glen’s guest posts:

  • Be as honest as you can be
  • Write awesome content
  • Respond to the comments of the guest post
  • Create some excellent bio footers that link back to your website

So there you have it. I took a long time collecting this information and putting it all together for you newbies and not so new bloggers so that you can succeed hopefully as I am going to next month. I plan on keeping track of my entire process of how I grow my blog a little more and what I do to get more traffic and subscribers. Now I am off to writing my first guest post. Go use these tips, and tell me how they work for you.
