Long-tail keywords produce higher conversion rates and a higher return on investment (ROI) than common keywords or head terms, but the trade-off is, they can be more difficult to find and manage. As noted in Search Engine Journal, the bottom 20% of searches, in terms of volume, generate 60% of conversions!

You see, whenever a customer uses a very specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are actually thinking of buying or in some cases ready to buy.

3 Reasons why you should be using Long Tail Keywords

User Intent

What’s the point if your website content is online but nobody is doing what you expect? Like buying or reading your articles, right? There’s typically three types of searches being done online. One user is just searching around, the second user is looking to acquire information, and the third user is looking to make a purchase. Most SEO professionals focus more on ranking to the top, but that’s the start of a website.

The end goal in most cases is to increase conversions: to make people click, to help them buy, to subscribe… to make people commit to some action on the website that ultimately converts to revenue.

The difference between “Samsung TV” and “Samsung UN85S9AFXZA” is this:

When a user searches for “Samsung TV,” you have very little idea what the user has in mind. Is the searcher looking for a solution to a buggy problem? Or is the person looking for general information about Samsung TVs? Perhaps the user is doing a survey on Samsung TVs.

When a user searches for “Samsung UN85S9AFXZA,” however, the user intent is much clearer: He’s probably looking to get that specific Samsung UN85S9AFXZA. There’s an instantly higher chance of being able to “sell” a Samsung TV.

Relevancy Ranking of Search Results

Main keyword searches with big competition and search volume are rarely going to yield high-value results, even if the information is epic content. That’s because they’re very unlike to be relevant.

On the other hand, with long-tail keywords, the results are very relevant. This converts to a higher conversion rate for folks ranking at the top for long-tail searches, as well as less competition.

Less Competition on Long Tail Keywords

I believe these screenshots do all the talking if you see the number of search results. The shorter the word the more competitive it is. But as we’ve seen, long-tail keywords usually result in a higher conversion rate. So, I’d rather spend time getting ranked number 1 for a difficult keyword is to rank number 1 for 10 long-tail keywords.

How to Find Long Tail Keywords?

 How to Install HitTail in WordPress?

If you don’t use WordPress on the back-end I recommend you go here.

With HitTail you can either go with the manual install here HitTail plugin for WordPress.

Follow these steps:

  1. Upload the seo-keyword-suggestions folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  2. Activate the SEO Keyword Suggestions by HitTail plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Configure the plugin by going to the HitTail page that appears in your Settings menu

Once you install, you visit the settings page and copy and paste the site id number HitTail provides you with

After you’ve installed the code you need to give it a few hours to start seeing some results come in real-time.

I personally like to visit the suggestions page to see where the traffic is coming from. Another function I like is the ability to generate the search for that specific keyword that your visitors are landing on through whatever search engine they’re using and you can see where you rank. From there you can then just go and optimize that page to improve your rankings.

I’ve started using HitTail to create new post and become more relevant to keywords I want to rank for. I’ve realized my blog wasn’t really ranking for words that I wanted to rank for or be associated with. In this case, I’ll be deleting non-relevant content from my site so I don’t confuse Google users and I don’t attract the wrong audience.
