Seth Godin-Linchpin Are you Indispensable?

Yesterday, I was done. I was done with one of the best books I’ve read this year. Yes, it’s probably going into my “top ten books” list. Seth Godin is the author of Linchpin “Are You Indispensable?”. By the way you should be asking yourself this question right about now. If you don’t know what it means to be indispensable these days, Seth is your guy to go to.

To be honest I would love for everyone I know to grab this book right now. I know that I will be giving it to a lot of my friends and family as a GIFT. For those I can’t buy one for I will summarize WHY you should get yourself a copy.

My Understanding of The Book

In Linchpin I was reminded that there is a genius in me, really in all of us there is one. He calls it a daemon. Are you indispensable? or simply said by Wilson,  are you irreplaceable? By not being one today you are an endangered species.

If I am doing “emotional work” everyday, if I am being an artist at my work, (notice as I said my WORK not my JOB) I am being indispensable. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an artist exactly, you know like a Picasso, that’s not what he means by artist. To be an artist is to be doing passionate work, to be doing work that really matters and work that you put some MAD LOVE into.

Whatever you are doing right now, this book showed me how business has changed the game. Being a factory worker just doesn’t pay the bills these days. You will need to start making your own paths, make decisions and just do it. Do what others don’t, add to your business or company. But don’t do it when they tell you, do it because it’s your gift.

If you don’t want to read the entire book, just read one chapter. If you read it once you will get it. If you read it twice, you will really get it. The resistance, as he calls it or our “Lizard brain,” is what keeps us from being artists, indispensable.  Anything that keeps you from doing something important, productive, successful, mind blowing is exactly that: the resistance.
“The lizard brain is the reason you’re afraid, the reason you don’t ship when you can. The lizard brain is the source of the resistance.”

What to take in?

The fact is, that you are indispensable or can be if you make the choice to. The time is now. Stop doing what the status quo does too. Be different, be remarkable, be unique. Don’t just do what you are told, do more than the other. Stop fitting in. Don’t let the lizard brain win. Whenever you are afraid to do something, do that. It’s a sign you need to ship.

This is my own book review, I am doing it because its my free gift to Seth. I do have affiliate links to the book in this post but you don’t have to click on them if you don’t want to buy the book. If you want to know more about Seth Godin you should visit his blog.

This is an excellent post Wilson. I have the book, but I've yet to read it, so I was very interested in your comments, in fact I'm going to start it just as soon as I've finished Rework.

    • I have that book in my list too How do you like Rework so far?

  • Hi Wilson,
Thanks for your post. I am half way through the book and like you I am coming to the conclusion it is essential reading. Looking forward to the 2nd half now.

    • Yea it is. Beginning the resistance chapter is when it got really good for me.

  • Hi Wilson,

You've contributed another glowing recommendation for Linchpin and I have it on order 🙂 The 'lizard brain' sounds like Seth's version of the subconscious mind. And, 'working' with passion and purpose in mind is the key. Can't wait to give it a read.

    • Oh kim yea, you are going to love this book. Like he says its a more personal book.
