Idea Shortage: How to Defeat It

Before I started to write this post, I ran out of ideas on what I was going to post about. So I started to tell myself, stop thinking like this, that’s just an excuse not to work, you are being lazy, are you being productive or are you just being busy? To say the least I don’t know why I couldn’t think of something to write about. But I knew I wasn’t out of ideas.

The problem

I could not come up with one idea to write on my blog about. I’ve decided to write about the problem. So why do we run out of ideas? Do we really run out of ideas? How can we come up with more ideas?

As you can see as soon as I found a problem I started thinking of ideas and solutions. Once I found a problem my brain started to ask questions that I had no answers to. This created a want to answer these questions, and find solutions to my problem.

From all these problems and questions obviously it lead me to research online and get involved in conversations with my friends on Twitter, I started to find the answers I was looking for and was able to write a NOT TOO SHABBY post. So here’s what I got.

Reasons why you may not have enough ideas

  • You don’t exercise your brain-I think the brain is like a muscle, and if you want to make it strong you need to work it out! C’mon, put some weights on your head.
  • Not Networking or interacting-Go to a chat room and listen. If you just sit there and listen to people, you will find the silliest ideas, but hey isn’t that what you wanted?
  • Not visiting where everyone ask questions-Just visit the FAQ’s of a forum where you normally visit and you’ll have plenty to write about.
  • Not Dancing salsa-Okay you can swing to your favorite tunes, in my case salsa.
  • Not reading enough blogs-Go to blogs and question everything-By not agreeing with what everyone is writing you will start to create your own solutions.
  • Not calling people you know-If I had a dollar for all the problems people have I would be a chabillionaire (I think he’s a rapper). You get it right? Ask them if they have a problem you can help with, make sure you tell them that doesn’t involve money. I learned my lesson.

These are just some of the techniques that helped me find ideas today to write something for you folks. Hope you enjoy them. If you have a way that you come up with ideas, you know something not so generic like keeping a journal and writing down ideas I think the readers would appreciate it; so would I. Anyway good luck.

  1. Hi Wilson,

Well, I haven’t had to yet… but I understand bloggers review books, other sites, products, etc. Whatever might fit under their main topic or focus.

We may feel like we’re just repeating what has already been said, but injecting our personality and experience helps. Those who we are meant to resonate with, will find us as long as we’re offering great content.

    Take care!

  2. Wow, I wrote the like the exact same post a little while ago. It was on not being able to find ideas, or for me, it was just having writer’s block. What I did was instead of writing about solutions for finding ideas, which you have made this into a post to write about, I wrote about the frustrations we get as bloggers when going through writer’s blog, which was what I felt during the time and made it into a post. It’s amazing what we can think about to write when we just take a step back and try not to force our ideas to come out. Thanks Wilson.

  3. Excellent post here! I have found that my ideas come more to me when I’m out in nature and not trying to overthink things. I enjoyed reading your points, they were helpful.

    Success,
    Baker
